At La Gerla Pizzeria in Lerici, you can have the opportunity to try the pizza with which the owner and chef Claudio Marchini won the 2006 Pizza World Championship at Salsomaggiore Terme.
It was the 4th of April, an unforgettable day! In the Salsomaggiore Terme Sports Centre, in the province of Parma, where every year the World Pizza Championship is held, more than 400 pizza chefs were gathered from around the globe.
After the Grand Gala evening the moment arrived for the on-stage award ceremony: to announce the top 10 pizza chefs where Miss Italy was also judged. After announcing nine runners-up, the moment finally came to name first place: “And the winner of the World Pizza Championship... from Lerici... with his MAURY GERLA... Claudio Marchini!”
Struck by emotion and left without words: Claudio couldn’t believe it; he had won the gold medal!
A pizza which was researched in minutest detail for months, with tastings and suggestions that truly resulted in great success: a velouté with saffron from Cinque Terre, fior di latte mozzarella, pink prawns from the Gulf of La Spezia coated in Colonnata lard, cherry tomatoes, chives and chilli pepper strands as garnish. The best of our region on one pizza!
